What are dermal fillers?
As skin ages, it begins to lose collagen filled with hyaluronic acid (HA). Collagen and HA add structure and volume to the face, therefore a lack of HA causes the skin to sag and wrinkle. That’s where dermal fillers come into play.
Dermal fillers are smooth injectable gels made from naturally occurring hyaluronic acid. Dermal fillers add volume to these deficient areas to restore your face to a more natural, youthful appearance.
What is Botox?
Botox is an FDA approved purified protein which is injected into targeted muscles and temporarily blocks nerve signals that cause muscle movements, essentially relaxing the muscle which reduces or eliminates fine lines and wrinkles.
Within 3-5 days of the Botox injection, the treated facial muscles become temporarily relaxed, causing the overlying skin to lay flat and unwrinkled. The untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion allowing facial expressions to be unaffected.
Botox injections only take a few minutes and will remain effective for 3-6 months.
How can Botox be used for dental treatments?
The cosmetic benefits of Botox are already well established, but dental Botox uses are starting to gain serious momentum. Dental Botox can assist with:
• headache pain resulting from muscle tension in the head, face, and neck
• headaches resulting from bite issues such as TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) Syndrome
• persistent clenching and grinding of the teeth
• “gummy” smiles due to over-retracted upper lips
• upside-down smiles (as it takes more muscles to frown compared to smiling)
• lip lines and puckered chins
How Do Dermal Fillers Work?
We are pleased to offer cosmetic treatments using Juvéderm® and Restylane® dermal fillers. These families of soft tissue fillers are formulated with hyaluronic acid, a substance that your body makes naturally. Hyaluronic acid is a type of internal “moisturizer” or lubricant. It helps sustain the moisture in your skin by binding to water molecules. With age, your body reduces its production of this chemical, just as it stops making abundant amounts of collagen and elastin. As a result of the decline in these vital substances, your skin becomes loose, thin, dry, and deflated. Juvéderm® and Restylane® infuse specific areas with hyaluronic acid. The influx of this acid draws in water molecules from the body and holds them in a localized area for a prolonged period. Where there is more water, there is plumpness. This can correct the appearance of wrinkles and creases and also enhance the contours of your face or hands.
How Long Do Dermal Filler Results Last?
When you consult with Dr. Ania about injectable treatment, she will discuss with you the expected outcome, when you can expect your results to mature, and how long you can expect them to last. Generally, dermal fillers can last from six months to two years. This depends on the type of filler you receive, the area we treat, and your body’s natural metabolism, which dictates how quickly the hyaluronic acid gets broken down.
Does BOTOX® or Dermal Filler Treatment Hurt?
It can feel intimidating to get cosmetic injections even when you’re excited about the outcome. Dr. Ania has considerable training and experience in the use of injectable treatments. Comfort is facilitated through the use of a very small needle. The dermal fillers that she uses are formulated to have a mild analgesic in the product. This works to reduce surface sensations very quickly. Injectable wrinkle reducers can cause mild, temporary pinching sensations. After the treatment, you might feel slightly tender or sore. These side effects should not limit your ability to resume most normal activities.
Is There Anything I Should Avoid after Injectable Treatment?
There is no need to take time off after receiving BOTOX® or dermal filler injections. However, there are a few ways you might need to alter your daily routine for a few days. Our goal is to ensure that you enjoy optimal results with the fewest side effects. Certain activities can exacerbate redness, swelling, bruising, and soreness. Some can also increase the risk of the product migrating from its intended treatment area. After your appointment, you should avoid engaging in exercise and strenuous physical activity, including heavy lifting or other actions that increase your heart rate. It’s also necessary to avoid rubbing or touching the treatment area unless Dr. Ania specifically instructs you to massage or work the muscles. Excessive heat and sun exposure should also be avoided for a few days.
