Periodontal Therapy & Dental Cleanings

We pride ourselves in customizing every aspect of your care, including your cleanings. Our hygienist will spend a lot of time educating you about your gum health and how to best maintain a healthy mouth.

Certain conditions, like high cholesterol and diabetes, as well as certain medications, can affect the health of your gums. However it is critical to note that the health of your mouth can affect your overall health.

Researchers at Columbia University found that people with gum disease were more likely to suffer from arteriosclerosis, narrowing of the blood vessels that can lead to stroke or heart attack. The same bacteria found causing gum disease was found causing inflammation that results in clogged arteries. Doctors measured the bacteria in the mouths of 657 men and women with no history of heart attack or stroke, as well as the width of their carotid arteries. The more bacteria in the subjects had, the more likely they were to have narrowed arteries. More studies will follow, but we can pretty much conclude that taking care of your mouth could have a significant impact on your cardiovascular health.

Both periodontal therapy and dental cleanings are critical components of keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Think of dental cleanings as preventative maintenance, whereas periodontal therapy uses more specialized treatment to address existing gum disease.

What to Expect: Dental Cleanings

Dental cleanings on a regular basis help prevent cavities, gingivitis, and periodontal disease. Your dental cleaning visit will include the removal of both plaque (soft, sticky bacteria) and tartar (hardened plaque) from your teeth. These often build up in the areas that are difficult to reach by brushing and flossing. After removal, your teeth are polished to remove surface stains and smooth the enamel, which makes them look and feel great while also helping prevent future plaque from accumulating.

What to Expect: Periodontal Therapy

Periodontal therapy includes treatments that prevent, stop, or treat gum disease, an infection around your teeth, which can include the gums, ligaments, and bones. During a periodontal therapy treatment, you can expect a deeper cleaning below the gum line to clean the pockets between the teeth and gums. This deeper cleaning includes scaling to remove plaque and tartar below the gum line to the bottom of each periodontal pocket. Root planing is the next step: smoothing out the roots to help the gums reattach to the teeth and keep bacteria, plaque, and tartar from reforming.

Sleep Apnea Devices

Are you aware of the impact that poor sleep can have on you? It can cause increased blood pressure, diabetes, anxiety, and an increased chance of a stroke, among other life-changing conditions. Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder where your breathing stops and starts while you’re sleeping. The most common symptoms of sleep apnea are:

  • -Loud Snoring
  • -Episodes of Breathing Pauses
  • -Gasping or Choking During Sleep
  • -Restless Sleep
  • -Daytime Sleepiness
  • -Morning Headaches
  • -Dry Mouth Upon Waking

Sleep apnea is a treatable condition. But if left undiagnosed, it can lead to more severe health problems, including hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes.

Treating Sleep Apnea

While there are many sleep devices on the market, many people prefer a simpler, minimally invasive, more comfortable, less cumbersome option to improve the quality of their sleep. Dr. Ania now offers some great options for minimally obtrusive treatment, like the MicrO2 and Somno Dent, to help you get that all-important rest.

The MicrO2 Sleep Device has been designed to treat your obstructive sleep apnea successfully. The MicrO2 reduces nighttime snoring and mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) in adults by holding your lower jaw forward during sleep, which prevents your tongue and throat tissues from collapsing into your airway. The MicrO2 Sleep Devices are patient-specific to maximize tongue space and the ability to open and close during wear. The MicrO2 offers:

  • -DIGITAL SIMPLICITY. The first CAD/CAM milled OSA device, MicrO2, is precise, predictable, and easy to use.
  • -COMFORTABLE PROFILE. The only OSA device made from control-cured PMMA, it is compact without compromising durability or retention.
  • -EASY ADJUSTMENT. Featuring an adjustment method similar to changing aligners, it has a one-piece construction with no moving parts.
  • -LINGUAL-FREE SPLINT. The MicrO2 offers a lingual-free design that is intended to offer the patient maximum tongue space.
  • -EXPERT DESIGN. The MicrO2 design is based on the clinical expertise of leaders in the field of Dental Sleep Medicine.
