Laser Cleaning for Deep Gingival Pockets

Sunday, November 27, 2011

In our last blog entitled “How to Reduce Your Risk of Gum Disease,” we discussed how at-home care and professional cleanings can help keep periodontal disease from forming. For patients who are experiencing signs of gum disease currently, my Boulder, Colorado dental practice would like to educate you on a powerful new treatment method that is highly effective at halting the progression of the disease and protecting your dental health.

While there are a variety of gum disease treatments available today such as scaling and root planing, laser cleaning is the only noninvasive therapy that accomplishes deep cleaning of gingival pockets. In a process that takes 15 minutes or less, laser gum disease treatment, also referred to as “laser decontamination,” employs the principles of laser dentistry to significantly reduce the amount of bacteria present in the mouth.

Benefits of Laser Treatment

As the laser is used to trace the gum line surrounding each tooth, the bad bacteria are annihilated instantly. Infections are halted before they cause permanent damage to gum tissue and tooth roots. The precision and power of the soft tissue laser allows us to penetrate deep into the gingival pockets to vaporize so much more bacteria than we could extract with instruments alone. The use of the laser also has an added benefit called “delayed recolonization,” referring to the ability of the gum tissue to resist new bacteria for a period of time following treatment.

Laser therapy is not only extremely effective at killing bacteria and removing diseased tissue, this method produces less discomfort, less bleeding and swelling, and quicker healing than traditional methods. In fact, most patients describe the process as painless and many studies have shown laser cleaning to be more effective than antibiotics.

Talk to our team about laser gum therapy and other periodontal disease solutions like crown lengthening, gingivectomy, tooth extraction, and soft tissue grafts. If you’re suffering from signs of gum disease, please schedule an appointment as soon as possible to discuss possible treatment options.
