Laser Cleaning for Deep Gingival Pockets

Sunday, November 27, 2011

In our last blog entitled “How to Reduce Your Risk of Gum Disease,” we discussed how at-home care and professional cleanings can help keep periodontal disease from forming. For patients who are experiencing signs of gum disease currently, my Boulder, Colorado dental practice would like to educate you on a powerful new treatment method that is highly effective at halting the progression of the disease and protecting your dental health.

While there are a variety of gum disease treatments available today such as scaling and root planing, laser cleaning is the only noninvasive therapy that accomplishes deep cleaning of gingival pockets. In a process that takes 15 minutes or less, laser gum disease treatment, also referred to as “laser decontamination,” employs the principles of laser dentistry to significantly reduce the amount of bacteria present in the mouth.

Benefits of Laser Treatment

As the laser is used to trace the gum line surrounding each tooth, the bad bacteria are annihilated instantly. Infections are halted before they cause permanent damage to gum tissue and tooth roots. The precision and power of the soft tissue laser allows us to penetrate deep into the gingival pockets to vaporize so much more bacteria than we could extract with instruments alone. The use of the laser also has an added benefit called “delayed recolonization,” referring to the ability of the gum tissue to resist new bacteria for a period of time following treatment.

Laser therapy is not only extremely effective at killing bacteria and removing diseased tissue, this method produces less discomfort, less bleeding and swelling, and quicker healing than traditional methods. In fact, most patients describe the process as painless and many studies have shown laser cleaning to be more effective than antibiotics.

Talk to our team about laser gum therapy and other periodontal disease solutions like crown lengthening, gingivectomy, tooth extraction, and soft tissue grafts. If you’re suffering from signs of gum disease, please schedule an appointment as soon as possible to discuss possible treatment options.

How to Reduce Your Risk of Gum Disease

Sunday, November 20, 2011

Even if you are in great dental health, you still have millions of bacteria present in your mouth at any given time. Gum disease can strike those who brush and floss regularly, too, so it is important to educate yourself on how the disease begins and progresses, and what you can do to prevent problems.

Be Proactive About Your Dental Health

So how can you protect yourself against bacteria that attack and degrade your teeth and gums? Your best defense against gum disease is to 1) prevent bacteria from settling by keeping a clean mouth, 2) see a skilled general dentist every 6 months for professional dental cleanings to spot any decay as soon as it starts, and 3) say “yes” to any recommended cosmetic dentistry or neuromuscular dentistry treatments to reduce your vulnerability to disease.

Even if your teeth look and feel super healthy, you never want to skip a dental checkup. If you notice any changes in your dental health, such as a change in how your teeth fit together, bleeding gums, or tooth pain, schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

Choose a Technology-Savvy Dentist

My Boulder, Colorado dental practice invests in new technology because it gives our patients an edge against the pitfalls of poor dental health. Advanced technology Innovations like the soft tissue diode laser help dramatically reduce bacteria, effectively delivering extra protection against gum disease.

The soft-tissue laser is also used to detect and treat cavities in their early stages, before they have a chance to spread and erode gum tissue. Laser decontamination is the application of this laser to effectively deep clean your gingival pockets, a step used on healthy patients in an effort to prevent disease. Laser therapy is the use of the laser to vaporize diseased tissue, perfect for helping our gum disease patients reduce the impact of bacteria.

If you’d like to learn more about how you can protect yourself from gum disease, my team and I would be happy to sit down and discuss a personalized strategy with you. To schedule a visit, please contact my Boulder, Colorado dental practice at your convenience.
