Signs of an Imbalanced Smile
Ideally, my team and I would like to address TMJ/TMD problems before they require emergency treatment or invasive therapy. I make sure my patients know that a bite imbalance can cause problems that extend beyond the teeth and gums. Please contact us if you are having any of the following issues:
- Loose teeth
- Noticeable weakness or wear and tear on tooth surfaces
- Shoulder, neck, or facial pain
- Frequent headaches
- Uncomfortable bite
- Tooth grinding
- Speech abnormalities
- Ringing in the ears
- Clicking or popping in the jaw
- Difficulty swallowing
- Postural problems
- Ear congestion
- Dizziness
Creating Balance For Your Smile
While many TMJ/TMD specialists once assumed the jaw joints were the primary cause of bite imbalance, today it is commonly accepted that issues elsewhere in the bite are to blame. For many patients, it is possible to achieve restoration through cosmetic dentistry by realignment of the teeth. Straightening teeth through Invisalign braces or correction through crown placement or other treatments often produces the changes necessary for a harmonious bite. In other cases that require a less conservative therapy, oral appliances, surgery, or referral to an ear, nose, and throat physician may be recommended.
Find Out If You Are Well Balanced
When you visit my dental office for your semi-annual wellness visit, I will check your bite and evaluate your current dental health to make sure you are not experiencing any TMJ/TMD problems. If you suspect you may have an imbalanced bite, or you’d just like to learn more about TMJ/TMD, you can e-mail my Boulder, Colorado dental office. We offer a full range of diagnostic and mouth rehabilitation services in addition to our general and pediatric dental care.
